Grid connection checklist for an EV charging site

Translate charging demand into an electrical brief before selecting a transformer or promising a schedule.

THE ENGINEERING QUESTION

Translate charging demand into an electrical brief before selecting a transformer or promising a schedule.

01

Measure the available capacity

Document connection voltage, transformer rating, maximum demand, existing building loads and utility constraints. Nameplate transformer capacity is not the same as spare charging capacity.

02

Define protection and distribution

A qualified local engineer determines cables, earthing, switchgear, protection coordination and any statutory design or inspection requirements. Reserve physical routes for later phases.

03

Plan the utility process

Ask early about application documents, studies, lead times, metering and commissioning responsibilities. Treat utility approval as a project dependency, not a charger feature.

04

Project application

A site may have a transformer rated above the intended charger total and still lack spare capacity at peak building load. Begin with historical demand, connection agreement and power-quality conditions. Utility lead time can dominate the launch schedule even when charger delivery is short. The local electrical designer should model the coincident peak, select protection and cable routes, verify earthing and define metering. Ask the utility which studies, applications or upgrades are required and identify long-lead items early. Reserve expansion paths without claiming that later grid capacity is already approved.

OUTPUT

What this decision should produce.

  • A useful handover is a connection responsibility matrix with owner, document, approval status and deadline for each dependency. iVoltia can support charger and interface design; statutory approvals belong to qualified local parties unless explicitly contracted.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Clarity before
commitment.

Practical answers about Grid connection checklist for an EV charging site. No guesswork.

Ask about your project

3 questions

01Can load management replace a grid upgrade?

It can allocate existing capacity but cannot create energy that the site does not have.

02Is transformer nameplate capacity spare capacity?

No. Existing loads, maximum demand and connection limits must be deducted or coordinated.

03Who handles statutory grid approval?

Qualified local parties and the utility, unless a different responsibility is expressly contracted.
