How a charging system is designed—from vehicle to grid.

The central guide to sizing, compatibility, electrical capacity, OCPP, commissioning, operations and expansion.

THE ENGINEERING QUESTION

A fleet, a retail site and a residential garage can buy the same charger rating yet face entirely different design problems. Start by naming the person who must charge, the energy needed before departure, the site electrical ceiling and the person responsible for an abnormal session. These four facts reveal whether the project is mainly about schedule, turnover, access or safety.

Project boundary

A fleet, a retail site and a residential garage can buy the same charger rating yet face entirely different design problems. Start by naming the person who must charge, the energy needed before departure, the site electrical ceiling and the person responsible for an abnormal session. These four facts reveal whether the project is mainly about schedule, turnover, access or safety.

02

Decision method

Build a one-page system map: vehicle and connector; charging window and required kWh; AC/DC architecture; electrical protection and communications; app and operator workflow; local construction and acceptance. Link each claim to a measurable test. The map prevents one team from specifying hardware while another assumes software or site works are already included.

03

Required output

The output is a shared project brief, not a final equipment order. It should state assumptions, missing data, optional elements and the decision owner for each interface. Only then compare product models and request a site-specific proposal.

10 questions

01How is charging power calculated?

Start with energy required per vehicle, real dwell time, simultaneity and operating reserve, then compare the result with available site capacity.

02Does more charger power always reduce charging time?

No. Vehicle acceptance, voltage, state of charge, temperature and the charge curve can limit useful power.

03What is dynamic load management?

It distributes a defined site power limit among active sessions according to rules such as departure priority, user group or building demand.

04What does OCPP compatibility guarantee?

It provides a standard communication framework, but not every function is automatically interoperable. Models, versions and workflows require validation.

05What should commissioning include?

Electrical protection, grounding, communication, vehicle sessions, sustained load, alarms, emergency actions and operator training.

06How should expansion be prepared?

Reserve and document the required switchgear strategy, conduits, space, network capacity and software architecture in the first phase.

07What is the difference between kW and kWh?

kW describes power at a moment; kWh describes energy over time. Size a charging project from required energy and available time, then check vehicle and site limits.

08Is connector shape enough to establish compatibility?

No. Voltage range, current, protocol behavior and vehicle requirements must also be checked. Use selected-model documentation and representative vehicle tests.

09Does load management increase grid capacity?

No. It allocates existing power and can reduce simultaneous demand. If required energy exceeds what the connection can deliver in time, change the schedule or electrical plan.

10Can this guide replace a local electrical design?

No. It explains planning principles. A qualified professional must evaluate the actual site, equipment documentation and applicable local requirements.
